If your department is not concerned about recycling old hard drives the easiest way to ensure that your data remains absolutely secure are to mechanically compromise the HD (smack it with a sledge hammer). If you wish to recycle or donate, the drive must be erased. There are software methods to erase drives, but they require a working pc and time. The degaussing process is fairly quick and extremely reliable. Of all the units on the market (that we have investigated) we have found that the V91 Max to be robust and affordable. It will work well with VHS and cassette tapes as well as any hard drive on the market.
